Where Do Bed Bugs Come From?

Bed Bug Life Cycle

Bed bugs basically have to go through six life cycles before reaching full sexual adulthood. Of these six stages in their life, five of them being immature stages while the sixth is one representing full adult hood.

Bed bugs grow via the process commonly called ‘molting’ (scientifically, the technical name of the process being ‘ecdysis’). The discarded exoskeleton looks like a hollow shell of the insect itself.

4–5 mm in length and 1.5–3 mm wide, adult bed bugs have an oval appearance, and are reddish-brown in color. They are also incapable of flight. The microscopic hairs give them what can best be described as a ‘banded appearance’.

Bed bug larvae, or nymphs as they are sometimes called, are translucent and have a much lighter color than their adult counterparts.

Feeding Habits

By nature, bed bugs only feed on blood. Since so many species live in domestic environments, human blood tends to be the major (if not the sole) component of their diet.

Bed bugs feed by inserting two sharp, tongues like appendages into the host’s skin and piercing a blood vessel.

One tube injects anticoagulants and anesthetics into the blood stream, while the other sucks in the blood. It can take anywhere between five minutes to ten for an adult bug to become fully engorged with blood, after which it goes back into its hiding place.

Although bed bugs try to feed every five to ten days, they can actually go on for even a whole year without having to feed.
It may be mentioned here that the feeding habits of bed bugs have actually become a boon for forensic science.

Due to their digestive and assimilative properties, blood from a bed bug’s body can be recovered for up to a period of 90 days. Once extracted, the blood can be forensically analyzed for DNA results, thus pinpointing the identity of the person(s) the bug fed on. Sometimes, this becomes vital in the determination of a victim’s or perpetrator’s identity.

Signs of Bed Bugs

Wondering where do bed bugs come from? Being largely nocturnal, not to mention their small sizes, bed bugs can be extremely difficult to spot.

The most tell tale sign, of course, is a bed bug’s distinctive odor of almonds or ripe raspberries. Other than signs of the bites, one may also notice drops of blood on the bed sheets, fecal spots and molted exoskeletons.

Even though bed bugs may be found singly, it is far more common to find entire congregations. Eggs may be found hidden amongst the seams of clothes and fabric.

Bed Bug Products

The traditional approach used for eliminating bed bugs included different kinds of pesticides which had a high toxicity for the insects. However, due to their prolonged use, pesticide resistance has increased tremendously in recent years. Furthermore, pesticides often have adverse effects on the people- especially children, since it involves chronic exposure.

More modern methods include vacuuming up the bugs, or heat treating the mattress.

So if you were wondering as to where do bed bugs come from I hope this piece of writing will satisfy all your queries.
